Booneville church of Christ
OUR HISTORY

The Lord's church in Booneville, Mississippi had its beginning in much the same way as many congregations in the first century. After the church was established on the day of Pentecost about 33 A.D., in the city of Jerusalem, there were about three thousand additions the first day. (Acts 2:41)

Then severe persecutions came upon the church, and they were scattered abroad to all parts of the known world, but as Acts 8:4 states, "those ... went everywhere preaching the word."

Many congregations had their beginning in the homes of devoted Christians ( Romans 16:5, Colossians 4:15, Acts 16:15).

The church in Booneville began much the same way when three Christian ladies, Clarissa and Fannie Wright, and Jessica Burns began meeting in their homes in 1903. In 1906 J.E. Wright moved his family to Booneville from Marietta and readily opened his home to the church as a meeting place. Brother Wright was a devoted and knowledgeable teacher of the Word, even teaching from his bedside before his death.

Some of the early families of the Booneville congregation were the Brumleys, Carters, Coxs, Chambers, Deans, Dunns, Felkers, McCullars, Mortons, Keys, Kizers, Lees, Pharrs, Williams, and Wrights.

Following the death of Brother Wright, the congregation began meeting in a rented building on Church Street. In 1919 the church bought property on Main Street and erected a frame building in 1920 which was used until 1950. In 1950 the frame building was torn down and a new brick building was erected. We soon out grew these facilities, and a choice five acre plot was purchased on Highway 45 North (Second Street), where we built and began using our present facilities in 1961. Numerous renovations and expansions have been made to the property in the past 46 years; all dedicated to the honor and glory of our Heavenly Father.

Those who have served the congregation as preacher are: W.A. Black, (1936-38), V.P. Black (1938-1942), Athelstone Crowson (1942-1945), J.W. Evans, (1945-1949), W.R. Ward (1949-1951), Joe K. Alley(1952-1954), Jimmy Powell (1954-1956), J.A. Thornton, (1956-1969), Bill Huggins, (1969-1982) Doug Greenway (1982-2003), Steven Guy (2004-2007). Jim Archer served as Associate Minister from 1952-1970; J.A. Thornton moved back to Booneville in 1984 and has served as Associate Minister since then. In 2007 Jim Estes came on board as Associate Minister, Larry Morgan has served as Education Director since 1976, and Tommy Baragona has served as Youth and Involvement Minister since 1999.

The church of Christ in Booneville is dedicated to restoring the love, faith and practice of New Testament Christianity, We understand that our time and resources here are to be spent serving our fellow man to the glory of God. We continually strive to spread the Gospel through world-wide mission work, youth ministries, elder care, audio tape/cd ministries, community services and a solid scriptural message. Our congregation is 100 plus years old but we recognize that we are just a small part of the 2000 plus year old church founded by our Lord as stated in Matthew 16:15-19, and we strive to worship in accordance with God's divine plan as set forth in the New Testament. We believe that everyone is valuable in God's sight, because we all have a soul that will live eternally somewhere. Therefore, we continually teach and preach the sincere, simple truth of the Gospel message. We strive to be a friendly and warm family of God who welcome all to worship with us as we grow toward our common goal of an eternity in Heaven.
